Second Instinct — a groundbreaking series

Second Instinct is one story the size of a continent, and it never stays in one country long enough to be called local. We are casting the ensemble that carries it: working actors, dancers and musicians, and a few new faces good enough to hold the same frame.

What you would be joining

HOME GROUND

Africa is usually somebody else's establishing shot. Here it is the cast list, the crew list and the score. The stages are in Morocco, where the light and the crews already are; everything else happens out on the continent, in places nobody has thought to call a location yet.

It is written to travel, and made to be subtitled. Which means the work has to hold in rooms none of us will ever stand in — and that is the whole reason we are casting it this carefully. What the story is, you read on paper and under signature, before you ever read it out loud.

THE VOICE

The series sings. We are casting voices that can carry a scene and not only a note — singers who can act, actors who can sing, musicians who can hold a room. A phone recording is fine. We are listening to the voice, not the room.

MOVEMENT

Scenes built on bodies before they are built on dialogue. Street, traditional, contemporary — dancers and choreographers who can take a direction and hold a frame. We care what you can do on the day, not where you trained.

THE SCREEN

Leads, supporting and ensemble roles for actors who have done the work — theatre, film, television, drama school. You should be able to carry a scene from the first take and take a note on the second. A few of these roles will go to new faces, and only to ones who are exceptional.

There is a gap
in the line

A reel, a tape, one scene, eight bars — whatever holds still long enough to show us what you are. Every one is watched by a person. Every one gets an answer.

You are applying to be cast as an actor. Tell us which roles you are putting yourself up for, and what else you can do on camera.

What else can you do choose any

A series built on music casts for more than lines. Pick everything that is genuinely true of you.

A CV or a portfolio — one of the two, either way round. Both if you have both. PDF or Word.

Three photographs. No filters, no retouching, plain background if you can — we are looking at you, not the picture.

Acting, singing or dancing — whichever you are here for. YouTube, set to Unlisted: Private means nobody but you can open it and we will not be able to watch it, while Unlisted keeps it off your channel and out of search but the link still works. Or Google Drive, shared with Anyone with the link — the default, Restricted, locks us out the same way. We open the link before this form will send. One that does not work cannot be submitted.
